Located in the northern part of <\/strong>Hungary<\/strong>, in N\u00f3gr\u00e1d county, in the Cserh\u00e1t Mountains<\/strong>, about 100 km northeast of <\/strong>Budapest<\/strong>, the small picturesque village of Holl\u00f3k\u0151<\/strong> is one of Hungary\u2019s most popular attractions.<\/p>\n

Holl\u00f3k\u0151 was developed mainly during the 17th<\/sup> and 18th<\/sup> centuries, its traditional rural houses<\/strong> preserve the cultural heritage of local Pal\u00f3c<\/strong> families.<\/p>\n

The village conservation area consists of 58 houses and a small church. The village is a representative of single street village type characteristics of the region.<\/p>\n

In the middle of the village, stands a small church with a wooden steeple and shingle roof, which was built in 1889.<\/p>\n

Some of the traditional houses were transformed into museum: Post Museum, Weaving House, Doll Museum and Holl\u00f3k\u0151 <\/strong>Village Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Castle of Holl\u00f3k\u0151<\/strong> was built in the 13th century on the hill above the village. There is a small museum within the castle. Old village of Holl\u00f3k\u0151 and its surroundings were added to UNESCO World Heritage<\/strong> List in 1987.<\/p>\n

Holl\u00f3k\u0151 programs, festivals<\/h2>\n

The most popular festival of the village is the Easter Festival of Holl\u00f3k\u0151<\/strong> (Holl\u00f3k\u0151i H\u00fasv\u00e9ti Fesztiv\u00e1l) when local women are dressed according to the folk tradition of Holl\u00f3k\u0151 (in their hand-woven, embroidered folk costumes) <\/strong>and celebrate the arrival of spring.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Besides traditional folklore programs<\/strong>, visitors can learn how to create the famous Hungarian painted Easter eggs.<\/p>\n

Holl\u00f3k\u0151 Castle Tournament<\/strong> (Holl\u00f3k\u0151i V\u00e1rj\u00e1t\u00e9kok) is organized in mid-August; it is a day of medieval tournaments when combats with historic weapons, historic music,\u00a0 dances,\u00a0 puppet shows\u00a0 and other folklore events are displayed.<\/p>\n

Pal\u00f3c Folklore Festival<\/strong> (Pal\u00f3c Sz\u0151ttes Fesztiv\u00e1l) is organized on the last weekend of July when local and international folk groups perform an open-air festival for the audience.<\/p>\n

Vintage Parade of Holl\u00f3k\u0151<\/strong> is held on the second Sunday of October when villagers walk along the main street in traditional folk clothes, demonstrating that grape harvest is over.<\/p>\n

How to reach Holl\u00f3k\u0151<\/h2>\n

There is no direct train<\/strong> connection to Holl\u00f3k\u0151. From Budapest<\/strong>, trains go to P\u00e1szt\u00f3<\/strong> (southeast of Holl\u00f3k\u0151) or Sz\u00e9cs\u00e9ny (north of Holl\u00f3k\u0151) and there are 8-10 buses daily from Sz\u00e9cs\u00e9ny<\/strong>, and 4-5 buses per day from P\u00e1szt\u00f3 to Holl\u00f3k\u0151.<\/p>\n

There is one direct bus to Holl\u00f3k\u0151<\/strong> departing daily from Budapest\u2019s central bus station at 15:15. On weekdays between 01 May and 01 September, an additional bus goes to Holl\u00f3k\u0151 at 8:30AM. The journey takes about 2 hours.<\/p>\n

If you are driving from Budapest<\/strong>, take M3 Motorway<\/strong> to Hatvan<\/strong>, then M21 main road to P\u00e1szt\u00f3, finally take the local road from P\u00e1szt\u00f3 to Holl\u00f3k\u0151.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
